This weekend Pastor Randy said something that was really new to me. I became a Christ follower in 1982, so I've been around awhile. I learned early on that there are disciplines in the Christian life that we are to practice to become more like Christ. But the focus has always been on the disciplines, the growth habits, not on the outcome, becoming like Jesus. This weekend he said that the growth habits are the nutrition that will help us to live the life of joy Jesus made us for. Like an athlete eating the right things so she can be at the peak of her competitiveness. As children, if we eat right and are healthy, we will grow in height and strength, more and more look like an adult man or woman, and become smarter and wiser. Those are the indications that we are maturing and becoming adults.
The indications we are maturing and becoming more like Jesus is having more of His characteristics. I also must improve in each of His characteristics. I can never say that I love like Jesus loved. I can start, but I have to keep growing so I get closer, and that, by the growth habits.
